Join Team-Sydney!

“Team-Sydney” is a brand new team in Australia, led by Jim & Claudia Jung.  MTW has other teams around Australia  as well (in Brisbane & Perth).  Together, as MTW Australia, we share a passion for God’s Kingdom expansion by initiating and sustaining church planting movements throughout the country.

Sydney, in particular, is one of those strategically critical global cities that must be reached with the gospel.  Forming a strong ministry team here will serve a wide range of people who are gathered from all over the world in this city, the same people who can in turn take the gospel to the utter ends of the earth.

CURRENT MINISTRIES

We are in the process of planting a new “genesis” church that can lend its “DNA” to further church plants around Sydney.  The new church is named Harbour City Church, and the Jungs have been networking in and around Sydney since early 2007.  Along the way, a new university ministry was started (called “Student Outreach to the World”—SOW) on three campuses (University of Sydney, University of New South Wales, and University of Technology in Sydney), which came as a surprise blessing.  The Jungs are also looking for ways to reach out to the city workers in key target areas. 

FUTURE MINISTRY

We would like to see the ”genesis” church develop into a strong resource church that can spawn other strong and viable churches that will be strategically located throughout all of Sydney Metropolitan area.  We would also like to see the church’s ministries branching out to areas of mercy and social justice; creative ventures; and missions mobilization.

CURRENT NEEDS

We are pushing on to form a ministry team and a core community that can surround the team.  While we are networking and recruiting locally, we also need to recruit other available church planters and team players to work and model Christian life and ministry from the U.S..  We need pastoral workers as well as lay workers.  We need godly people who can minister to the students and city workers.  We need families that can model Christian life in all its reality.  Our target demographics consist of 20-39 age bracket, English-speaking, ethnically diverse, students, professionals and young families.  These are the future of this highly “unchurched” society, and they need to be engaged with the gospel now!

CULTURE AND MINISTRY CONTEXT

Sydney is Australia’s first and largest city.  And in the past decade, it has fully emerged as a notable global city, especially since the 2000 Olympics.  Sydney has a jewel of a harbour, and the famous Opera House and Harbour Bridge to grace the picturesque view.  Its climate is mild and pleasant all throughout the year, and you can read about its highlights from various travel book in your local library or bookstores.

Australian culture is an interesting amalgamation of its convict heritage, British ties, American influence, multi-culturalism and Asian-Pacific global position.  All these factors affect their ethos, trends, life-style and commerce.  More important, they are always evolving.  In terms of its spiritual climate, Australia has never experienced revival as a nation, although it considers Christianity its cultural heritage.  Australia is thoroughly secular, post-modern and diverse.  Sydneysiders are less than 2% evangelical protestant.  Demographically, they are from nearly 200 different birthplaces around the world, and over 50% are either born overseas or have at least one parent born overseas.  Sydney is phenomenally diverse, and we believe God will use it to reach the rest of the world; and our work is positioned to be used in this way.
